Strategy

Any product in the digital world will require significant software development. There’s a variety of digital tools for enhancing time to market speed and effectiveness.

For SaaS apps and websites, InVision can be used to create specific mockups and designs for each webpage or product feature. This makes collaboration smooth and easy. Engineers and designers can create the initial prototype, then other stakeholders can jump in and provide feedback. This cuts down on updates following the official launch and gives the entire company insight into initiatives.

Work-Life Balance

Communication

And truthfully, with all the options available at people’s fingertips, there really is no excuse in offering poor customer service in today’s digital age.

Beyond traditional face-to-face customer service at a brick-and-mortar storefront, companies today have countless ways to connect with their customers, and it’s high time they take advantage. Here are a few of the best customer service-oriented interaction channels for your business:

Phone

Besides face-to-face interactions, a phone call can be the best way to communicate with your customers. Say you want to limit confusion and explain a detailed process with ample back and forth. Well, speaking with a customer in real time can help you explain a process or resolve an issue more efficiently. More importantly, it can lead to forging stronger customer relationships.

Indeed, email is a convenient medium to deliver company updates, account reminders, and advertisements and promotions for your customers to peruse.

It’s also one of the easiest ways to communicate with people, as these conversations can be easily organized and looked back upon as a reference point. With that said, however, CIO.com recommends you keep email interactions brief and to the point, as your customers’ time needs to be respected.

Social Media

If you want to keep up with your customers and competitors, and the digital age in general, then you need to be where people spend a majority of their time: social media. To better cater to your customers and prospects, set up support-specific pages on Facebook and/or Twitter and pay attention to what your customers are saying (good or bad) about your business before responding.

Because everything is public, this is a great way to show off your brand identity and customer service acumen by showing consumers how seriously you take their feedback. In fact, a Gartner study concluded businesses that fail to provide timely responses on social media, or even at all, experience a 15 percent increase in churn rates for their existing customers.

Experiential marketing is best explained as the act of creating branded face-to-face experiences. Today experiential marketing is paying off in big ways. Here are three success stories from companies who have tested out experiential marketing.

Cabela’s Store Opening

When opening up its second store location in Virginia, the outdoor retailer Cabela’s looked to The Hodges Partnership, a strategic communications firm, for help. Hodges was no stranger to facilitating consumer and media facing events which made the partnership a good fit for the outdoor gear brand. Hodges looked at event timing and planned to “make it fun” by providing interactive experiences for visitors which included trying on camo, archery opportunities, fly fishing experiences or getting cozy in expedition tents inside of the store. The firm garnered local publicity and news coverage for both its media preview and grand opening event where news stations were on site with a brand spokesperson. A good spokesperson is key, cites Hodges, as people want to hear personal stories. Visitors were able to experience the Cabela’s brand in a tangible, offline manner, which makes it a success story.

Google Play Music Block

Google Play set out to engage an audience at the 2016 Panorama Music Festival. It was here where Google Play erected a visually-striking LED multimedia block. The “Music Block” featured changing music videos, a rotation of animated designs and other performances solely based on the New York festival’s sets and fan interaction. The “Music Block” married digital and offline experiences all while keeping consumers and festival-goers connected to the Google Play brand through social media, as the brand’s social tags and handles were visible throughout the festival experience. Not only did the towering “Music Block” made for a background worthy of the ‘gram, the interactive exhibit assisted Google Play in spreading brand awareness in an organic, real-life way without being too pushy. This isn’t Google’s first attempt at experiential marketing. The search engine giant awarded 5.5 million to Bay Area non-profits through their “Building a Better Bay Area” effort, which engaged the public, allowing users to indirectly learn about Google and its community outreach.

Lean Cuisine #WeighThis

Unlike tried-and-true event marketing, experiential marketing is different. Instead of providing samples and asking potential customers to “try out” new products, Lean Cuisine took a new, fresh approach with their #WeighThis campaign. The interactive experience based on consumers own accomplishments features a gallery of weight scales hung up in New York City’s Grand Central Station. Upon a closer inspection, passersby would notice that the hanging scales were actually boards where women could jot down how they wanted to be “weighed.” Lean Cuisine operates in an industry where women are always being told to lose weight. Rather than focusing on body image or weight, Lean Cuisine empowered consumers through their campaign. While there were no samples or Lean Cuisine products at the train station the brand strategically placed its Twitter handle predominantly on the display. With over 204 million impressions, the #WeighThis experiential marketing effort is considered a big win for the Lean Cuisine brand.

The Essential Difference Between Native, Responsive and Hybrid Applications

One of the first decisions you’ll have to make is whether you want a native, responsive or hybrid application.

Native

Native applications are mobile sites designed specifically for a particular operating system. For example, if your company chooses to create native applications, you’ll need to design one for Android and one for Apple iOS to reach the maximum number of users. Of course, there are other operating systems in existence, and you run the risk of completely bypassing potential end users unless you create one app for each system. Therefore, the native route can be expensive.

However, a native application generates the best user experience thanks to its customization. Native apps contain a familiar interface, making them easy for users to learn to navigate. Device features can also be integrated with the app, allowing users to grant access to the camera, geolocation, calendar and more. Finally, native applications are downloaded directly to the device, giving users quick access to your services and serving as a continuous reminder of your brand.

Facebook is a good example of a native app.

Responsive

Responsive sites represent the best mobile marketing option for companies on a budget. The website itself is scaled to fit the screen size and navigational capabilities of the device on which it is being viewed. There’s no need to create a different version of the website for each of the myriad mobile devices on the market; the website automatically “responds” to each device in order to give the user a working interface.

Instead of accessing your mobile site via a unique application, users simply open up their mobile web browser and type in the site’s URL. Instead of the “desktop version,” the mobile site will be displayed.

To see an example, head to driving-tests.org on your desktop, and then pull up the same URL on your mobile device. Note the streamlined formatting on the mobile version. The mobile version is displayed because you are viewing the site from a mobile device, and this streamlined view gives you the best user experience. It’s that simple!

Hybrid

Hybrid applications are a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Developers essentially create one core application that is then integrated with the various device interfaces. By using plugins, hybrid applications can also allow users to grant access to the device’s camera, calendar, notifications, geolocation and more.

But there is a downside to hybrid applications: one small detail that goes amiss can cause quite a headache among developers. The device integration is not always seamless, and the labor involved in patching and repairing the application could just as well be spent on creating a fully native application. The performance of hybrid applications is also somewhat slower than that of native applications. In short, going the hybrid route is considered a bit of a gamble; it’s attractive because it seems like a great way to keep costs low, but sometimes it’s too good to be true. Which Mobile Development Strategy Is Right for You?

To decide which mobile development strategy is right for you and your business, consider the following:

  • Your current talent pool. What can your team create? Or do you need to outsource?
  • Your budget. Responsive is the least expensive option; many web hosting companies include responsive mobile sites in their packages. Hybrid is a step up and native is the most expensive.
  • Your goals. Do you just need to share information? Then perhaps a responsive site will do just fine. Are you creating a tool or resource? Consider an application.

If in doubt, start with a modest approach and enhance your mobile development strategy once your company outgrows the current iteration.

If your supply chain could use an overhaul, consider starting with these three essential steps.

Map out Your Supply Chain Management Strategy

An effective supply chain starts with a good supply chain management (SCM) strategy. To develop your strategy, start by mapping out the steps in your supply chain, identifying each stage your product goes through on the way from your supplier to your customer. Major stages typically include procurement, production, warehousing and transportation, including returns. You should also consider how your supply chain interacts with your marketing and sales processes, since it’s important to make sure your sales cycle stays in sync with your available supply. Likewise, you should correlate your supply chain with your cash flow cycle.

To make your strategy actionable, you should establish key performance indicators (KPIs) you can use to measure the success of your strategy implementation. For instance, perfect order measurement measures the percentage of orders that are error free. Cash-to-cash cycle time measures the number of days between when you pay for your supplies and when you get paid for sales. The second step is to set up your suppliers and business processes. When choosing suppliers, a priority should be finding vendors with a reputation for on-time delivery. You can research vendors by interviewing them, talking to other people in your industry and reading online reviews. You can also try ordering a sample to test out a supplier or product. You will also need to select a delivery service. If you’re operating in the U.S., there are two main categories of delivery service you can choose from. Some services provide confirmation of delivery. These include US Postal Service Priority and First Class package services. Other services provide door-to-door shipment tracking. These include US Postal Service Express, FedEx and UPS. Door-to-door tracking services generally cost more than delivery confirmation services.
