Don’t start off the new year still hanging on to last year. No matter how much you succeeded or failed in the goals you set for yourself in 2014, you have to assess, plan, and move on for 2015. To help you start the new year with a clean slate and set up for success, download this short worksheet to guide you through this exercise.
Step 1: Look back at 2014.
Think about the goals you set for yourself. Whether or not you achieved them is NOT what we’re interested in today. What we want to do is understand WHY you did or did not meet them. Were they unrealistic? Were they specific enough? Did you even set the right goals?
Once you have given those a little thought, it’s time to move on to 2015. You get a chance to start all over with a clean slate.
Step 2: Set your goals for 2015.
There are three parts to setting these goals:
Make sure they are SMART goals. They should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.
Think about WHY these goals are important to you. If you don’t know the WHY, you risk getting lost in other tasks or opportunities that come your way. Be really clear about why you have these specific goals.
Create the action steps necessary to achieve your goals. Break them into monthly or quarterly milestones. The simpler the steps, the more likely you are to achieve the goals.
Step 3: Stop – Start – Continue
For the final part of this exercise, list (again, be specific) the things you need to STOP doing this year that are sabotaging your success. Now, list out the things you have to START doing to ensure you reach your goals. And last, I’m sure you learned a few things in 2014. What can you continue doing that worked well this year?
