There are so many options with social media, and the options of what to do with social media seem to change daily.  In order to make the most of your social media presence, it’s good to come up with a plan before you begin.  Once your plan is in place, you can work at posting items that will help you reach your goal.

Make a Goal – Your goal might be to become positioned as the “go-to” expert on a certain topic.

Decide on your Audience – Given your goal, you may have several audiences.  In the example of becoming recognized as an expert, some example audiences would be a professional society in that industry, a magazine that focuses on the industry and a few clients that you know use that particular expertise.

Develop Content – Develop how you are going to get your audience to know you are an expert.  This is where you would identify all of the things that make you an expert.  Make a list of your experience, any papers or presentations that you have given or will be giving on your topic, and awards or accolades you have earned.

Get the Word Out – For each item of content that was listed above, there is a different type of social media that would be an appropriate way to get the word out about these achievements.   For example, all of the items can be described on your LinkedIn page, but it is very difficult to tweet your resume, so you need a different tactic on twitter.   On the other hand, tweeting about or adding a Facebook status about an upcoming presentation is a great way to get the word out about that.

Making a plan and coordinating the efforts is an important step to having a successful social media presence.  Link the various social media venues you use to make the most of your time and effort, and remember to update your information when appropriate.  Please contact us if you are looking for additional information on using social media.
