If your supply chain could use an overhaul, consider starting with these three essential steps.

Map out Your Supply Chain Management Strategy

An effective supply chain starts with a good supply chain management (SCM) strategy. To develop your strategy, start by mapping out the steps in your supply chain, identifying each stage your product goes through on the way from your supplier to your customer. Major stages typically include procurement, production, warehousing and transportation, including returns. You should also consider how your supply chain interacts with your marketing and sales processes, since it’s important to make sure your sales cycle stays in sync with your available supply. Likewise, you should correlate your supply chain with your cash flow cycle.

To make your strategy actionable, you should establish key performance indicators (KPIs) you can use to measure the success of your strategy implementation. For instance, perfect order measurement measures the percentage of orders that are error free. Cash-to-cash cycle time measures the number of days between when you pay for your supplies and when you get paid for sales. Customer order cycle time measures the time between purchase order receipt and delivery. Supply chain platform provider Tradecloud lists 17 KPIs that should cover most companies’ needs.

Set up Your Suppliers, Business Processes and Production Cycle

The second step is to set up your suppliers and business processes. When choosing suppliers, a priority should be finding vendors with a reputation for on-time delivery. You can research vendors by interviewing them, talking to other people in your industry and reading online reviews. You can also try ordering a sample to test out a supplier or product. For instance, o-ring provider Apple Rubber provides samples and quotations upon request. Use online directories such as SupplyChainBrain to assist you in locating suppliers.

Business processes you need to include are systems for managing inventory, setting price levels, accepting payments, fulfilling orders and handling returns. Your returns process should include procedures for assisting customers and for receiving and processing extra items and defective items. Make sure your returns and other processes, such as inventory management, integrate with your bookkeeping procedures so that everything gets entered properly. To streamline your procedures management, the best practice is to adopt supply chain management software.

Another important item is planning your production cycle. In addition to production itself, phases you should map out include testing for quality, packaging products and delivering orders. You should also establish metrics for tracking your performance, such as employee productivity, and product quality and output.

Establish Your Logistics Network

Another key component of a successful supply chain strategy is your logistics network. You should document your procedures for handling orders from customers, invoicing payment receipts, transmitting orders to your warehouse, shipping orders and returning orders.

You will also need to select a delivery service. If you’re operating in the U.S., there are two main categories of delivery service you can choose from. Some services provide confirmation of delivery. These include US Postal Service Priority and First Class package services. Other services provide door-to-door shipment tracking. These include US Postal Service Express, FedEx and UPS. Door-to-door tracking services generally cost more than delivery confirmation services.

The video included footage of a dog enjoying time with his owner, while the owner’s background voice detailed his love for his dog and personal stories. These few techniques are a high impact method of instantly engaging audiences through an emotional response.

Color Psychology

This is a fun one to add and something that most graphic design firms really think about when designing new branding pieces. Green is usually environmental or money. Yellow is warmth and happiness. Purple is more royal, sophisticated and expensive. Deep blue is corporate and conservative. These are things to consider when designing a new brand or expanding the colors you use at your company.

The bottom line is the more professional your graphic design looks, the more people will trust you and your brand. The more they trust you, the more they will recommend you to those with whom they come in contact. There are many simple and easy marketing ideas that work, however if you listen to Forbes Magazine, sharing referrals is one thing you should most definitely include in your marketing strategy.

 

Sharing Referrals Means More Work for Everyone

Knowing how important generating referrals is, your next question is probably, “How can your business generate referrals?” Outside of begging people for referrals, there are a few things you must do on your end, including:
  • WordPress Developer and Consultant, Carrie Dils, admonishes us to “Treat people well and do good work and you’ll have a good customer for life.” Although this sounds like a basic idea, it really does work. You don’t need gimmicks and tricks. You just need to do what’s right: treat your clients well and deliver good work.
  • Chief creative officer of The Sherwood Group, Will Sherwood, says, “When you stir the imaginations of your clients and leave their competition shaken and wondering, ‘Now what do we do?’, the referrals often come pouring in.” We work with clients who want to push beyond the obvious. This said, the work doesn’t have to be edgy or outlandish — those campaigns often don’t work anyhow. Having set our standards high, people notice the difference and recommend their friends and colleagues to us.
  • Jennifer Bourn, Web Designer and Content Strategist at Bourn Creative, reminds us, “Great work speaks for itself, and a great experience makes referring new business to you a no brainer.” Once again, it comes down to doing good work. However, this really is the best thing you can do when you want referrals.
  • WordPress consultant, Jared Atchison tells us that “Clients value my expertise and don’t want a yes man.” While this sounds pretty one-sided, it’s quite applicable to you as well in that an important part of doing good work is looking out for your client’s best interests and treating them well. While businesses should make this a standard part of service, it’s often not the case today. This doesn’t end when you’ve completed the work. You’ll want to continue looking after them even after they’ve paid you since you’re working to develop a good relationship with them.
  • Website designer, Curtis McHale says that, “The best way I’ve found to generate referrals is to simply ask.” You can’t just ask for referrals, you must teach your clients how to refer you then continually remind them to do so. Of course, it also helps if you make this really easy for them to do and then thank them for doing so.

Not too long ago, turning to Facebook to help grow your business was a cutting-edge and savvy move. Like many celebrity romances, however, the relationship has run its course.

Here are 5 reasons why Facebook doesn’t work for promoting your business:

1) If You Build It, They Might Not Come.

While the demise of Facebook has been greatly exaggerated by some, it is losing ground to other social media platforms. Yes, it is still the largest social media platform in the known universe, but it is losing users, most noticeably in the younger generation. Teens are turning to tools like Tumblr and Snapchat, and Facebook is falling out of favor with older users, too. That means a potential loss of audience for your business as well. If your target audience isn’t using Facebook anymore, relying on it to generate business or drive website traffic is a bad marketing decision.

2) Static Content is Boring.

Dynamic website content is a premier marketing asset. Facebook, however, is largely static. When a user visits your page, the wording of posts is different, but the look and feel of it remains unchanged. And you have little control over how the information appears. There are better and more effective ways to present content to your customers.

3) Facebook wants to promote Facebook, not your business.

When you create a business Facebook page, the goal is to use Facebook to drive visits to your business webpage or brick-and-mortar store. 4) You Are Building Facebook’s Advertising Database, Not your Own Customer List.

When you generate fans of your Facebook page, the only way to contact those customers is via Facebook posts. You don’t receive e-mail addresses, physical addresses or phone numbers. You can see a list of your fans, but you are not provided with an outside means of communication. You might be building legions fans, but only Facebook knows their personal details.

5) You Can’t Reach ALL Your Fans Without Paying. Again and Again.

More troublesome than the previous reasons. Even if you build a loyal following, you still won’t reach all your fans without forking over additional funds to Facebook. For example, if your business page has 3,000 fans, a typical post might only reach 1-5% of those people. Unless you pay Facebook to “promote” those posts. For another fee, Facebook will ensure your post reaches more people. Which sounds reasonable, until you realize it is more people already like you and whom you might have already paid Facebook to reach. Facebook has even warned businesses and others with fan pages to expect their organic reach to continue to decline in the future.
