“How do I get more visitors to my website?” This is a question businesses are asking daily. Typically, this has nothing to do with your website’s quality, especially if it was professionally designed. Instead, there’s one thing every marketer understands and every website owner must also learn. Read on. . . .

Creative Tips to Bring More Visitors to Your Website

The online world is an attention economy. Attention is finite, and therefore scarce. So if you want people to pay attention to you, you need to earn it. ~ Kiyara Sharma, Quora

For this reason, creativity is a really important part of marketing. With it you have four tips for attracting more visitors to your website:

Create an amazing blog.

This is the type of blog you update often with meaningful content that’s written with a compelling headline, bullet points, and useful information.

Give away some of your best work for free.

According to Tim O’Reilly, “Obscurity is a greater threat than piracy” because if people haven’t heard of you, they won’t rip you off or pay for your work either. So, use a creative commons license and give away a chapter, free report, video, design template, or a few images but keep the really good stuff for them to buy from you later on.

Borrow someone else’s audience.

Instead of starting from scratch, write a high-quality guest post for a popular blog in your niche. This is your chance to make a really good impression and attract these readers to your own blog and it’s not even unethical. In fact, you’ll receive many thanks for your guest post from the blog owner themselves.

Circulate your content on social media.

This is a great way of finding new followers for your blog. Don’t just share your own content, share other people’s content as well.

While none of these tips are “quick fixes,” they offer cumulative benefits. As such, you’ll continue building on to your business with every step you take. If you need help understanding how this works or putting it to work for your business, contact us. We’re happy to help!

Under the new paradigms of human resources, employees are assets and the hiring process leans towards social onboarding. Today’s best practices understand that an employee will spend a third or more of their weekday at the office. It will be a source of friendship and self-esteem, as well as income.

New Employee Onboarding: Best Practices

For the best onboarding practices, be sure to hit all of the domains of the employee’s work life.

Create A Thorough Job Description

The ability to do their job properly is one of the biggest factors in your employee’s job satisfaction. This means that the first domain that needs to be addressed is the job description. A good job description should be written by the person that truly understands all aspects of the job. This way it is robust, specifically addressing all of the functions required by the employee. The job description should be written for the job and not the person. This is a common mistake when attempting to include the social aspect of the occupation.

Lay Out The Salary Structure

Once they know what the job entails, an engaged employee is going to want to know the pay scale and any other associated benefits. Unlike the job description, where it is useful to be nearby while the employee absorbs the information, salary and benefit data is best given in private. Try making use of software that allows you to create and print paperwork such as W-2 forms and outlines of salary structure and benefits. Then send them home so that they can think, consult with family and generally take in the fiscal impact of their new positions. Make sure that the salary information includes opportunity for raises, advancement potential and vacation and sick time reimbursement.

Include Communication

A newcomer to the best onboarding practices is communication. If we look at onboarding as an invitation for the employee to enter the company’s social environment, then you will need to give them all of the possible ways to communicate with their peers and administration. Typically a telephone and email directory come first, but many companies have embraced social media as a blended communication tool as well as a marketing method. The company may have a monitored Facebook group where the employees can interact on positive aspects of company life and the general public can gain insight into the workings of the company. Make sure that the onboarding process includes all of the rules for social media communication.

Introduce The Culture

You are now including a new member into your business family. Like any family, it is your job to give the employee the lowdown on the beliefs and the passions of the organization. According to the Harvard Business Review, there are six domains to a company’s culture. To truly bring your new employees on board, you need to introduce to them the vision, value, practices and the place in general, as well as give them the narrative of the organization and an introduction to the key people that support the culture.

Everything Else

Each company is unique, so be sure that your onboarding process has a portion that covers all of the things that your employees need to know. This can be anything from bathroom locations to charitable activities. At the end of the day, a best practice onboarding procedure will bring the new employee into the organization on all of the levels of engagement that it has to offer.

Life is good.  Billings are steady; the phones are quiet, so no clients are complaining; and the staff seem content.  Yup.  Everything is fine. . . . Except it’s not fine.  Your business may be suffering from the most insidious maladies: the triple threat.  Unnoticed, these three factors will kill your business from the inside:

Be On The Lookout For This Triple Threat To Your Business

Threat No. 1: All Of Your Eggs Are In One Basket.

This may sound like a no-brainer, but it can happen so quickly, totally under the radar.  One day you notice that those interchange projects account for 45% of your billings.  Maybe more. What happens when the federal government doesn’t pass a transportation funding bill, and there is no more money for those projects?  It’s a rare business that can take a 45% hit to the billings and remain standing.

So What Can You Do? You need to diversify. Look for low-hanging fruit in other market sectors and get those jobs.  Keep the interchange projects going, but lower your risk.  And fast.

Do you need help growing your business? Click here to check out the website design and marketing communications packages from The Sherwood Group. We can help you achieve your business goals and leave your competition shaken and wondering, “Now, what do we do?”

Threat No. 2: The Phones Are Quiet:

You’re spending your time completing the work you have, so there’s no time for business development.  The either/or mentality is a silent business killer.  Clients are notorious for putting projects on hold.  How will you pay your staff when they’re on the bench, waiting for the job to start again?

How Can You Prevent This? Create a business development plan, and stick to it.  If you craft it to fit into your existing schedule you’ll be much more likely to stay on course, and grow your backlog. Do this today.

Threat No. 3: Your Staff Are Mutinous:

What? Everything seems fine.  The deadly word here is seems. You’re out of touch with your workforce, and this is the most poisonous threat of all.  If you don’t have your finger on the pulse of your staff’s morale; or worse, you’ve got them firmly under your thumb, the dam is ready to burst and there go your doers.

How Are You Supposed To Fix This? Talk to your people.  Because, after all, they are people. With families, hopes and dreams.  Chances are high that your business is NOT their number one priority.  If you don’t know them, and what makes them tick, your staff will disengage.  Get everyone together for a pizza lunch once a month. Encourage the field guys to interact with the office more.  Let them know you care.

There are a lot of external threats to your firm’s well-being, but if you take the steps necessary to root out the Triple Threat, you’ll be able to meet other challenges head on, from a position of strength.

“Your best source of new business is referrals from happy customers or clients.” ~ Forbes Magazine. . . There are many simple and easy marketing ideas that work, however if you listen to Forbes Magazine, sharing referrals is one thing you should most definitely include in your marketing strategy.

Sharing Referrals Means More Work for Everyone

Knowing how important generating referrals is, your next question is probably, “How can your business generate referrals?” Outside of begging people for referrals, there are a few things you must do on your end, including:
  • WordPress Developer and Consultant, Carrie Dils, admonishes us to “Treat people well and do good work and you’ll have a good customer for life.” Although this sounds like a basic idea, it really does work. You don’t need gimmicks and tricks. You just need to do what’s right: treat your clients well and deliver good work.
  • Chief creative officer of The Sherwood Group, Will Sherwood, says, “When you stir the imaginations of your clients and leave their competition shaken and wondering, ‘Now what do we do?’, the referrals often come pouring in.” We work with clients who want to push beyond the obvious. This said, the work doesn’t have to be edgy or outlandish — those campaigns often don’t work anyhow. Having set our standards high, people notice the difference and recommend their friends and colleagues to us.
  • Jennifer Bourn, Web Designer and Content Strategist at Bourn Creative, reminds us, “Great work speaks for itself, and a great experience makes referring new business to you a no brainer.” Once again, it comes down to doing good work. However, this really is the best thing you can do when you want referrals.
  • WordPress consultant, Jared Atchison tells us that “Clients value my expertise and don’t want a yes man.” While this sounds pretty one-sided, it’s quite applicable to you as well in that an important part of doing good work is looking out for your client’s best interests and treating them well. While businesses should make this a standard part of service, it’s often not the case today. This doesn’t end when you’ve completed the work. You’ll want to continue looking after them even after they’ve paid you since you’re working to develop a good relationship with them.
  • Website designer, Curtis McHale says that, “The best way I’ve found to generate referrals is to simply ask.” You can’t just ask for referrals, you must teach your clients how to refer you then continually remind them to do so. Of course, it also helps if you make this really easy for them to do and then thank them for doing so.
Understanding how important sharing referrals are, will propel you towards success in your business. If you have questions about referrals or need some help getting them, contact us. We look forward to helping you grow your business.

Black Friday is the one night of the year where people are willing to wait in two- and three-hour-plus lines for any sort of great deal. While this holiday is generally more profitable for larger stores, it doesn’t mean smaller businesses can’t also get customers through the door.

Gaining and Retaining Customers with Bonafide Black Friday Deals

Black Friday can be a great way to start garnering more year-round loyalty, but there are steps that need to be taken beforehand to ensure this is the case.

Strategic Marketing

The Internet is a great resource for Black Friday advertising. Customers look to online ads for the best Black Friday deals in order to plan their night accordingly. So, it would, of course, be advantageous of you to put some money toward advertising on different social media platforms to reach this audience. Advertising specifically for Black Friday on your website is crucial. Make it known to your website visitors that you intend to participate and promote the products you will be selling.

Web Promotion Design

To catch customers’ attention as soon as they land on your website, make it as easy and evident as possible that you are participating in Black Friday. Use color psychology — more specifically, red banners — to attract customers to your home page and indicate price cuts. Also make sure your website is as straightforward as possible. If customers can’t navigate it, they are more likely to leave and never return. So, before launching your website, ask professionals and people in your inner circle to critique it and offer feedback, so any bugs can be fixed beforehand. In addition, make sure the website can handle increased holiday traffic as crashes tend to deter customers.

Refund Policies & Procedures

When it comes to return policies, make sure you’re using this as a tool to make more money — not just to appease customers. Provide enough time for customers to accurately assess your product, but don’t allow them to sit on it and depreciate its value. If a customer decides to return something, use that as an opportunity to further your business. This can be done by providing great customer service that they’ll remember the next time they think of purchasing from you. In addition, you can suggest another product altogether that could alleviate the issues they had with their previous purchase.

Early Purchasing Incentives

Offering deals before your competitors is a great way to keep customers interested in your business. Amazon does this by way of a countdown to Black Friday on their website, with visitors earning different savings each day leading up to the mega event. Providing these “savings sneak peaks” will give new customers an incentive to pay attention to you and provide repeat business. After all, the more times customers visit your store or website, the greater the probability that they will return throughout the year.

Participating in Black Friday can seem intimidating, particularly with the competition that faces you. But the more you prepare, the more loyal customers you’ll get in the end.

Regardless of what type of site you run, one of the most common questions you probably ask is, “How can I get more visitors to my website?” You’re not alone in asking this question. Many businesses grow frustrated by their lack of traffic too. Even the best website often encounters this problem.

How to get more visitors to your website

It’s not easy to get thousands of visitors per month, but it’s definitely doable. With this in mind, here are some tips that can help you get more visitors to your website:

Create an amazing blog

One that captures people’s attention by always delivering content that’s valuable, useful, and entertaining (e.g. spend a whole blog post on one singular idea, give concrete examples). Make sure you end with a question that invites people’s comments.

Give away some of your best, most valuable work

(E.g. the first chapter of your book, a free report or e-book, the best track on your album, a design template, high-resolution photos, a tutorial series, videos people can embed on their website) for free. Make sure you include a Creative Commons license so people clearly know what they can and cannot do with your content.

Do you need help growing your business? Click here to check out the website design and marketing communications packages from The Sherwood Group. We can help you capture new business and achieve your business goals.

Guest post on other websites

This will allow you to borrow their audience instead of spending a long time starting from scratch, building your own. Your payment for writing high-quality blog posts for other websites in your niche is your link back to your website through which you can land hundreds of new subscribers.

Circulate your content via social and portfolio websites

(E.g. Behance, Contently). Just make sure you share more of other people’s work than your own so you position yourself as an authority in your niche.

Please note: None of these methods are a quick fix.

They all require time, effort, and perseverance, but in turn they offer cumulative results (e.g. links, subscribers, more visitors whom you can turn into customers). If you still need some help getting traffic to your website, contact The Sherwood Group. We’re happy to help!

When you operate a graphic design firm, you’re always on the lookout for the best tools available that up production, streamline workflow and fulfill client needs in a more efficient manner. Cloud tools can help you do this. Online workshop spaces, easy collaboration tools and project management software are all live on the cloud right now. Here’s a look at the best cloud tools for graphic designers.

4 Cloud-Based Tools for Graphic Designers

Design Tool

While Adobe Creative Cloud is the industry standard, it also costs a pretty penny. However, Affinity Designer is the first high-end creative design app for Mac OS X. It supports files such as PDF, SVA, EPS and more.

Affinity Designer also features cross-platform support with the cloud, pixel preview and layers. It utilizes the best Apple computers can offer in hardware, such as Core Graphics, OpenGL and full retina display images. The real kicker is that it comes at a fraction of the cost of Adobe Creative Cloud, giving you the performance you need at an affordable price.

Morpholio

Morpholio is a free portfolio app that lets your team present a flawless portfolio of work to potential clients. Since this is a cloud-based app, any team member can be granted access so they can present work anytime anywhere.

You can also share images and have discussions on each project in the comment menu. Team members can sketch over images, and share ideas quickly and easily from remote locations. For instance, if a client wants an image changed, an employee can use the app to make a quick sketch over the piece for the client to see immediately.

Mozy

Mozy is a cloud storage service with an emphasis on security and easy sharing. It allows users to schedule daily backups and store projects so that employees, contract workers and even clients can access them from anywhere. Since Mozy syncs across all platforms, whether it’s iOS or an Android device, you can access your projects with the touch of a button.

With Mozy’s military-grade protection and encryption, your client information will also be safe from prying eyes. For example, it protects against ransomware, a type of malware that spreads through your computer and locks files so you can’t access them. Mozy acts as another line of defense against this type of attack. If your files are stored on the cloud, this type of ransomware can’t access them.

Most ransomware comes in the form of a link through email or social media, so make sure your employees do not open strange links while on work devices.

Wrike

Wrike is online workflow management software designed to improve efficiency of centralized and remote work forces. With a three-pane layout, you can view project data at a glance and keep track of progress. You can ask for updates, prioritize tasks and share projects with team members and clients in addition to using analytics to create reports that show timelines and project efficiency.

A large focus of Wrike is a streamlined management approach, allowing employees to see exactly what they are responsible for and the deadline for these tasks. One of the most common reasons for delayed projects is miscommunication, and Wrike aims to minimize this.

The art of great graphic design these days often gets lost in the panic to produce current and inherently usable web design. In such an environment, it is important to realize that the two fields are not quite the same thing.

How Great Graphic Design Is Different from Web Design
Graphic design encompasses a more holistic view of your business’ design needs, covering the full palette of your marketing and promotional materials, as well as internal stationary, etc.
Web design, however, concentrates its efforts solely on your company’s specific web page. When choosing a company to cover your overall design needs, it may help to have one that can cover more than mere web design and. Your Message

Carefully designed brand logos and images can communicate important messages to your target audience. Recognition
