It’s a scary feeling to not know if the person on the other end of the email is both good at what he or she does and honest in his or her business dealings. There is no way to get a 100 percent guarantee that everything will go smoothly, but the following few methods will help keep you at ease:

Search The Freelancers Online Profile

Today, few people are anonymous, and most established professionals maintain some sort of profile on a social network. For some who have deep ties and a long history, they may do most of their networking in person, but even they are likely on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter.

You may not be able to glean deep details of their work habits from these networks alone, but you can get a sense of their general demeanor and way of interacting with the world. Just think of the people you follow on Facebook, and consider how many you would instantly rule out working with based on their online behavior alone. People reveal a lot about themselves these days — all you have to do is look.

Use an Established Freelance Network

In addition to the popular networks everyone uses, many freelancers also have a presence on sites like Elance, Freelancer, Upwork, Demand Media, GetACoder, iFreelance and Project4Hire. These, and other similar websites, cater to different types of creatives, so they are worth looking through to see if a person has a credible work history. Many potential candidates will send you links to these profiles to show you the positive feedback they have gotten. Such information doesn’t prove the person is reliable and professional, but it can go a long way toward easing your mind with a first-time hire.

In fact, finding your next contractor through these networks from the get go is a great idea. They have defacto screening processes built in, and anyone with a rosy profile and established credibility on such sites likely will care about maintaining their status. This means they usually go above and beyond to make sure you’re the next satisfied client on their resume.

Find References

While the digital realm offers many options, do not underestimate reviews and word of mouth recommendations. Companies know the importance of sharing testimonials with potential clients, and anyone who can’t provide some quality references isn’t worth doing business with.

You cannot trust this completely, however. That’s why it can be helpful to inquire independently rather than simply trust the glowing words about the potential contractor. Look on a variety of sites for the candidate’s work and ask your colleagues and other industry professionals if they have heard of this person. Getting references from several sources makes sure you get a well-rounded and unbiased review of any potential freelancers.

When it comes to digital marketing, social media is one of the first tactics companies turn to when it comes to developing a digital presence. This is not necessarily a good thing. Like most elements in history, social media is entering a new era of potential: domination.

Problems with Social

Like we’ve said before, companies everywhere are using social media. That’s the issue, all companies are turning to social media for their digital marketing! It’s difficult to make your brand stand out when the same tactics are being used across the board. Also, when it comes to social media marketing, there’s a lot to learn, and it can be overwhelming. Here are some common problems that arise when a company doesn’t use social media properly:

  • Lack of Engagement – It’s called social The point of social media is to engage with your followers and have your followers engage with you. Retweet, share and respond to comments, both positive and negative. Not being social on social media is like agreeing to an interview but refusing to answer any questions.
  • Bragging – Your fans and followers already like you or they wouldn’t be following you on social media. You don’t need to spend your time on social media bragging about how great your brand is. Chances are, you’ll lose followers if you’re too heavy on the self-promotion.
  • Automation – Managing several social media sites can be tedious and overwhelming. There are several different sites and platforms like Hootsuite that allow you to manage multiple social profiles at once; however, it’s still important to have a physical person monitoring all social accounts to avoid mishaps like this.
  • Oblivious to Current Events – Keeping up with current events is necessary in the marketing field in general. There have been way too many incidences where lack of knowledge stirred up some major crises management issues for brands. This is common with hashtags. If some terrible tragedy has occurred, it would be in your best interest to not use it for your benefit.
  • Failure to Measure – Having a lot of followers isn’t enough to have a successful social media presence. If consumers aren’t engaging, your social media presence is useless.

You need to get enough sleep for these and many other reasons.

  • It’s important for your health. Your body simply can’t be healthy without sleep. Your immune system can’t work properly. You will get sick more often and it will take longer to get over every little illness. However, it goes deeper than your immune system. All of your systems are affected by lack of sleep, including your heart.
  • Sleep is important so you can function properly. You also need sleep to be able to do a good job, no matter what you do. You can’t function when you don’t get enough sleep. You might make little mistakes. You could even make big mistakes that can’t be fixed. You will even have trouble concentrating.
  • It is important to get enough sleep to have a good mood. Many people who go for long periods without sleeping well have trouble with their moods. They are often grumpy and are unpleasant to be around. You may have trouble keeping your business going if you become difficult to work with. You could also lose your regular job.
  • Sleep is so important. Your health depends on it. If you don’t get enough sleep you may notice that you start to get sick more often and can’t get over it. You may also notice that you have trouble concentrating and may start making little (or big) mistakes. You may also become grumpy and unpleasant to be around. You may lose clients. Make sure you go to bed on time every night! Your body will thank you.

Points of Contact

While it might not seem like points of contact have anything to do with marketing, who your clients talk to is a huge deal to them when it comes to repeat business and recommendations. Having to talk to a different person every time they call you is disconcerting for a client and often leaves them feeling as if they are not very important to you.

It is impossible for everyone in your company to always know every client and every prior conversation, and your client must make up for that lack of knowledge over and over again. Whenever possible, your clients should never have more than 3 points of contact on any project – the front desk secretary, the primary contact who handles all interactions between company and the client, and a backup contact who is at least familiar with the client just in case.

Social Media

Social media is fast becoming a life or death type of issue for your clients. A project failing to spread well enough on social media platforms can kill that project within a matter of days, instead of the weeks or months of the past. It only takes a few moments to scroll through a client’s social media pages and actively participate in making their project a success by sharing, liking, repinning, and most importantly well-written comments.

Those few moments put your name in front of the client over and over again and gives the client the knowledge that you care about them and their success, even if you are not working on the current project with them. That kind of impression on a client simply can’t be bought.

Different things are taboo for different people in business.  Depending on your sex, age and the field in which you work, there’s going to be a different taboo for you.  This doesn’t mean that you have to watch each and every step that you take when you’re in business.  However, it’s a good idea to consult your common sense whenever you feel as though something is not quite right.

In general, people always find that hindsight is 20-20.  They can’t help exclaiming, “I thought something was wrong” or “I knew I shouldn’t have said/done that.”  If you ever feel that your instincts are telling you to do something other than what you’re doing, it’s time to step back and think about whether you’re breaking a taboo.  Here are a few of the taboos for men in business:

Holding Yourself to a Different Standard than Women

Let’s say you’re an account executive at an insurance brokerage firm.  There are about five other people in the same position as you, all of them women.  You see them coming in early to work everyday and leaving late.  They’re obviously professionals and hard workers.

In this type of environment, if you’re seen coming in to work late and trying to charm everyone with your boyish smile, without doing the type of work that the other executives are doing, people are going to notice and be resentful.  You need to accept that the same standard holds for both, men and women.  Then work hard enough to meet it.

Hiring Someone for Their Looks

We’ve seen this scenario play itself out in various movies.  The high level executive hires an assistant based purely on her appearance and not her skill set.  You might think that having a beautiful assistant hovering around you is going to make you look like a powerful man in a business setting.

However, this is unfortunately not true.  Not only are you missing out on the work done by someone truly efficient, you’ll also be coming across as someone who is easily taken in by appearances.  Plus, if your clients are women, you can be sure they’ll notice that you value women only for their looks.

Talking About Women Behind Their Backs

There are many ways in which women are slandered in business.  They might be made fun of for the way they look or act.  Their reprimands may not be taken as seriously as those of men.  And lies might even be spread about them.

Given that we are in the twenty-first century, these behaviors have become very outdated.  Neither your male nor your female work colleagues will appreciate it if they’re not taken seriously.  So it’s a good idea to give people the respect they deserve based on the work they do rather than their sex.
