Pleasing everyone seems to be an uphill battle most days, and when you get bad reviews on Yelp, those Negative Nancy’s can actually hurt your business! Here are four strategies that we at the Sherwood Group hope will help you turn things around for you.

1. Respond

When you see bad reviews on Yelp, you can respond to it as a business. A successful way to win someone back over is to empathize with them, assure them that action is being taken, apologize, and express hope that they will give you another shot. For example: “Negative Nancy, that experience certainly does sound unpleasant. I assure you that action will be taken to prevent this from happening again. Our sincerest apologies for your bad experience. We hope you will give us another shot someday so that we can make it up to you! Best, Management”

2. React

If you are consistently getting bad reviews on Yelp targeted at one facet of your business, it may be time to take action. For example, if there are numerous complaints about service being slow it may be a good idea to hold a staff meeting and address this concern. Work with your staff to fix the internal issues and the reviews should become more positive!

3. Encourage

People who have had a bad experience are more likely to feel motivated to write a review than those who had a good experience. If bad reviews on Yelp are tainting your page, perhaps reach out to some happy customers and suggest that they write a review as well. This can be done either in person or through a social media status. Letting potential customers see pleasant reviews as well will paint your business in a better light.

4. Relax

If all else fails, sometimes all you can do is take a step back and relax. It is impossible to please everyone and sometimes you just have to accept that Negative Nancy will have a bad day no matter what you do! Just remember how many people enjoy your business everyday and try to let the others fall to the wayside.

Many small business owners still don’t believe in email marketing. They focus on blogging or social media marketing, without trying to set up an e-mail list. However, it is really important to have a list of clients and potential ones.

Part of your goal of blogging and social media marketing should be to set up an e-mail marketing list for the following reasons:

1. Email Marketing is Easy.

Sending out e-mails is simple and easy to do. It won’t take a lot of time to write e-mails for your customers and potential customers so you won’t have to hire any new employees to manage your e-mail marketing campaign.

2. Email Marketing is Effective.

Most people check their e-mail several times a day. Not only do they check it, they read important e-mails and follow-through with things that are important to them. Make sure that you keep your customers informed of any sales and specials and they will be sure to shop during those times.

1. More Than Ever People Use their Email on Mobile Devices.

With the growing number of smart phones and tablets, people now have access to their e-mails no matter where they go. This means you can send business e-mails out when you are running errands and people will receive them when they are out and about.

Still not using e-mail marketing?

It is time to get started. It is not difficult to set up. You will probably even be able to use your smart phone to send out messages when you are on the go! Many people worry that they will have to hire more employees but with e-mail marketing, you shouldn’t need more help. It does not take much time to write a few e-mails to keep your clients informed about your company. It is also very effective. If you start offering some coupons, you will see it right away.

In years past, we all relied on the yellow pages, or on word of mouth to grow our businesses. These days, people type in a search phrase, and if your business shows up on any page other than page 1 of Google, Bing or Yahoo, you can forget it! For better search engine rankings, blogging tops the list to help your business get found on the web.

With an infinite amount of choices, how do you help your business get found on this global platform called the world-wide-web? This is where blogging and the four “E’s” come into play. Educate, Entertain, Engage, and Enrich:

Educate:

  • Before you start Blogging, a little research is in order.  You need to determine who your target market will be.  This will need to be clear within the content you post on your blog.
  • Be relevant – if your target market are new college graduates looking to promote their skills, you don’t want articles that talk about estate planning and retirement accounts.
  • Relate to your audience – write like you are having a conversation. Making it personal by using ‘I” and “you” can be a bit scary for some people, however, this helps to close the gap between the blogger and the reader by reducing the formality.

Entertain:

  • Start with a funny quote, anecdote, or even a question.  The person reading will find this more real and be more inclined to read further.
  • Adding a video that relates to the overall content will help corroborate the message.
  • Be different with the same boring material – you can find much of the same information on a single topic, so how do you differentiate yourself from everyone else?  Add a personal story or find a different way to represent your topic.

Engage:

When someone lands on your site, you have on average, 2.6 seconds to  grab their attention.   This is a great opportunity to show a funny graphic,  tell a funny story or even ask a question.

Enrich:

Enrich is a verb that means improve or enhance the quality or value of.  Ask yourself this question, “does the content in my article improve, enhance or provide value to my reader?”  Be consistent in your message. Make key points tweetable.  Make it easy for your audience to participate.

By following the 4 “E’s” of blogging, you can be sure that you will have an ever increasing audience and in no time you will be easily found.

According to eMarketer, 2 billion of Earth’s 7.2 people are now on social media. This is a large number of people your business can reach. Furthermore, social media is the best way to reach out to lots of people without spending much money.

social media, social media not working, will sherwood, the sherwood group, graphic design, web site design, advertising, marketing, santa clarita, los angeles

So, if you’ve tried, but say that social media is not working, here are 5 reasons it may not be helping you build and grow your business:

1. Do you pay-to-play on Facebook?

There’s no doubt about it, Facebook is one of the biggest social media platforms today. However, reaching people requires that you “pay to play.” In other words, reaching people here requires a small advertising budget.

2. Do you do more than simply post sales messages?

You can’t simply post sales messages or you’re considered a spammer. Instead, you need to form relationships.

3. Are you trying to make sales on social media right away?

Don’t head out on to social media expecting to make a sale right away. Instead, you need to give to get. Posting useful information now is the best way to make sales in the future.

4. Are you trying to be everywhere at once?

Trying to be everywhere at once is a sure way to fail. Instead, you need to make a serious commitment to just one site at a time.

5. Are you pretending to be someone you’re not?

Be yourself! People buy from those they know, like and trust. So, start forming real relationships instead of trying to be popular.

As you can see, a lot of this has to do with building relationships. Anymore, social media marketing is all about building good relationships and not just spamming your products. So, when you’re ready to make social media work for you, contact us. We look forward to helping you overcome these obstacles!

Getting your company found on the internet is not always the easiest thing to do. But with the many free tools out there from Google, you can be assured your blogging presence will be seen.

Blogging: The Google Way, blogging, will sherwood, graphic design, web site design, advertising, marketing, los angeles, santa clarita

Google specializes in internet based services and products.  Although some of the products and services Google offers do cost money, there are several services that Google offers that truly are free to anyone who knows how to find them.

Google My Business

The one service of late that I have been getting hit with is Google My Business.  This use to be known as Google Places.  In order to tap into your potential clients locally, you can submit your business for free  to Google My Business.  By doing this, your business will be featured in the local search results along with being featured in Google Maps.

Google Trends

This tool is great for finding specific keywords that are trending.  You can compare them to other keyword variations and determine popularity over time and within different regions and languages.  This is great for getting ideas for keywords.

Google Alerts

This can be used two ways.  The first ways is for monitoring the web for specific keywords or phrases mentioned across the internet.  The other way that this can be used is dynamically.  By choosing a key phrase, you can get a list of current stories that are trending and place this directly into your website.  Depending on your settings this can change hourly or daily.  This is a great tool for dynamic content on your page.  Google bots love new content!

Google Feedburner

This is a great way to grow your reach within the web.  This will allow your visitors to subscribe to your web content by using feeds.  There are many tools within this service that can optimize your reach.

Youtube

Google and Youtube merged in 2006.  For people who are video marketers, this free service is not something that should be passed up.  Although you can now post videos to Facebook natively, they are hard to find once they have been up for a while.  However, by placing videos on YouTube they will always be there.  They won’t be hidden within your feed and are easily searchable.  You can also monetize any of your own videos. This can generate a secondary revenue.

Google Search Console

This is a very powerful tool if you can find it. There is one important thing with this tool.  You need content and lots of it.  This replaces your website generated search bar with a google generated search bar.  You set up all the keywords and phrases you want to use.  You can also set up promotions if you have local events going on. This will display search results from your own webpage.  It will also show Google Ads.

Google Adsense

Google Adsense is a free tool for your website. According to your specifications, ads will appear on your site.  Every time someone clicks on one of these ads, you get paid.  In addition, the ads that appear in the Google Search Console results, you will also get paid for if someone clicks on them.

This is a lot of information.  This can be overwhelming but, taking it one piece at a time and learning about it will help.  The bigger question becomes how to link all these things together.  That would be Google Analytics

Google Analytics

This is the most powerful tool that Google has available for your website.  I don’t want to go into this too far as there is enough information that can generate hundreds of articles.  But I would like to point out that this can link all of the above mentioned tools together in one place.  If you are a person that loves statistics, you will have more than enough to keep you busy for days.  The last thing I will mention about this is their knowledge center.  This will walk you through many of the different features and help you get started.
