Keeping up with all the changes in business skills can be trying. In a Constant Contact survey, 59 percent of respondents felt running a business was harder today than it was five years ago, and 49 percent of those people said that keeping pace with technology was an issue.

How we conduct business may be ever-evolving, but there are some business skills that never go out of style. If you’re a small business owner, entrepreneur, marketer or creative who wants to find success in the modern working world, make sure you have these three skills mastered.

Communication

Running a business requires communicating with all sorts of people — customers, suppliers, other businesses and more. Not only that, but you must be able to communicate across many more channels than you would have just a decade ago. A successful business needs you to be capable of communicating via social media; according to ActiveSocial, more than two billion active social media accounts exist today, and that’s a demographic you can’t ignore. Social media and mobile communications have drastically changed the art of communication, and a smart entrepreneur must be a master of them all. Social Media Examiner features a guide to get you started.

Furthermore, to properly run a business you will need to be capable of speaking to staff and investors in a public setting. Learning to speak in front of groups and comfortably present ideas and initiatives to others is the hallmark of a leader. If you freeze in front of a crowd, check out the public speaking program Toastmasters.

Organization

While some people may believe being organized is a talent rather than a skill, you can’t afford to think that way. Time management goes a long way it getting projects done and delegating tasks to those with the know-how to perform are critical parts of what makes you successful. Balancing the books and having a working knowledge of accounting procedures isn’t something you should think of as optional; many businesses collapse because of bad bookkeeping skills.

Additionally, keeping documents, shared resources and data organized is one of your most important tasks. Luckily, cloud storage and computing services like Mozy exist to help you manage the mountain of data and documents that are now a part of everyday business. A disorganized workplace is an unproductive one, and keeping things streamlined leads to successful projects and enterprises.

Ability to Analyze

Today’s workplace is one that requires a sharp eye for analysis. We live in a time that is much more technologically complex, and as new technologies and trends emerge, you must be able to think critically about the present state of your business. This requires the ability to analyze data, at least in an abstract form. From creative to executive, the new workplace demands analytic thought and the ability to make compelling arguments about what this data means. Don’t shut yourself away and only worry about the tasks in your job description; take advantage of the stockpiles of data that are out there to look into the future and see the direction you want to go. Failure to do so could leave you in your industry’s dust. You may wish to consult a business analyst if this isn’t your strong suit.

As a small business owner, you probably deal with all of the problems in your business. You handle all of the paperwork and the bills. You deal with the difficult clients. When the hassles never seem to end, is it time to throw in the towel?

time to quit, will sherwood, the sherwood group, graphic designers, website designers, santa clarita, los angeles

There is nothing wrong with quitting. Sometimes a business is not worth continuing. So, when is it time to quit without feeling guilty?

  • You are losing money instead of making any. We all know that it takes money to make money but if you are not making any money and instead are spending a lot of your hard earned money on your business with no signs of bringing any in, it might be time to quit.
  • You are losing interest. There are times when you don’t want to quit because you have invested so much time and energy into your business. However, if you aren’t interested anymore, how can you interest others? You won’t be able to get new clients if you are not passionate about your business.
  • There are no clients. There is no business without clients. Even if you feel like you have the best business plan, if you don’t have anyone interested in buying your product or services, you don’t have a business. Make sure you do your research before you invest too much into your business.

Many people hate to quit, especially small business owners who have invested time and money into their business. However, there are times when you should quit. If you are losing money or interest, you might want to quit while you are ahead. Also, if you don’t have any clients, you don’t have a business.

With a whopping 57% of millennials logging on to Facebook at least once a day for news and updates from their friends, it’s important to become an authoritative source, thought leader or news source in your niche if you want to succeed with your social media marketing.

shutterstock_233959858

By learning to use Facebook to help grow your following, you’ll reach a wider audience and get helpful information out to them quickly for self-promotion and brand awareness. Here are a few ways to establish your business as a leader in your industry:

Create Original Content

This is the most important step that you can take when establishing your Facebook presence. If you’re solely posting other publications’ content, you’ll be sending your followers the message that they are the authoritative source, while you’re just the gatherer of the information.

By creating insightful, well-written original articles, you can share them on Facebook and become seen as an authority in your area of expertise.

Keep your content entertaining with these tips:

  • If your niche deals with topics that can be difficult for the average person to comprehend, simplify the content. If you don’t make it easy for your followers to understand, you will only end up alienating your audience.
  • Include relevant images in your articles and make sure that they are shared within your Facebook post. From a user’s perspective, photos are the most engaging type of content on Facebook, with a whopping 87 percent interaction rate.

Stay Current

Use the following tips to stay relevant to your audience:

  • Create an editorial calendar: Create a scheduled filled with the content topics that you plan to tackle throughout the month and year. By seeing your plan as an overview, you’ll be able to spot areas of weakness, repetition, and opportunities for additional marketing initiatives. Stick to your calendar and use it as a way to leverage seasons and special holidays as well. For example, May is National Foster Care Month, and LifeLock took the opportunity to recognize it by sharing the personal story of a LifeLock employee and his experience with foster care and identity theft.
  • Spin trending topics: The sidebar on Facebook below your update feed is a good place to see what topics are trending. Another good place to go is Twitter, which has a trending topics tab that highlights the most discussed topics of the day. Be creative and find a way to spin your topic in a way that ties into what others find most important.
  • Get inspired by others: Take a look at what your competitors and other successful companies are doing on Facebook. Armed with this helpful information, you can emulate some of their successful tactics and create new ones of your own. Take note of the following:
    • What kind of articles are they posting on Facebook?
    • What tone are they using?
    • Are they posting news of their own, or just passing along information from others?

Becoming authoritative on Facebook means staying current on how to best engage your audience on the platform. Create relevant information, make it entertaining and robust, and make sure your website is up to par as well, so your audience can find additional information about your business there.

Should you bother with smaller social media sites? If your brand is geared to a particular niche market, using a certain smaller social media network can help attract new customers. Sometimes on larger social media platforms your brand can get lost in the “noise” and you won’t always target your desired audience.

social networks, social media, will sherwood, the sherwood group, graphic design, website design, santa clarita, los angeles

Finding the right social media network is more important than just having an online social presence.

Tagstr.co

By now, many businesses are aware of the usefulness of hashtags, but there is one smaller social network that is completely built around this tool called Tagstr.co. Here are some key features of this smaller social network:

  • The focus of this platform is uploading and sharing content –including images and video — which you then tag in order to appeal to people with specific passions and interests.
  • One of the main things that sets this social network apart is that you don’t have to follow people or be friends with them in order to keep up with their content. Instead you connect with people based on specific topics.
  • This platform is a great opportunity for businesses to connect with many new potential customers. By tagging your content, you specifically target people who might be interested in your brand, rather than just hoping your brand interests people via social media who you are already connected to.

Spring.me

Businesses are also often already conscious of the fact that providing useful content is essential in social networking. One great method is answering questions that people may have. Spring.me is a social media platform that allows you to just that. Here are some key features of this specific social network:

  • By being informative, you can present your brand as an authority on a subject. As a go to reference, people will learn to trust your business and see it as having value.
The social network also has traditional elements such as sharing multimedia and private messaging. It also allows for you to integrate your questions and answers via chats as well.
  • Spring.me is particularly popular with a younger demographic so it can be a great social media site if you want to appeal to this audience.
These are just two social networks that you may not have heard of, but there are literally hundreds out there that may appeal to your targeted audience.
  • The key to finding the right social network is figuring out who your customers are and where they network online. Searching online for a social network is one way to start getting connected, but asking your customer base what platforms they use is also helpful.

Whatever smaller social media network you choose to use, engaging your customer is essential for building your brand. Contact us for more information on what social network is best for your business.

Time management is a must when you own your own business. You have a lot that you need to accomplish every day to keep your business running. You must wear many hats, especially if you don’t have any help. Some days probably don’t feel quite long enough.

more productive, will sherwood, the sherwood group, graphic design, website design, santa clarita, los angeles

Here are some tips to help you be more productive in your business.

Before you leave every night…

(Or first thing in the morning), make a list of everything that you need to do for the next day. Put this in order of importance. Then, when you come in to work, you will be able to just sit down and get started.   Some people work better if they start their morning off making their list.
Have a weekly (or biweekly) list of things that need to be accomplished. Make sure that you re-evaluate this weekly or biweekly. Maybe you can accomplish more or you are too stressed because you are putting too much on your plate. You might discover that you need to hire a little help so that you can finish a project that really needs to get done.

Keep your office organized and free from clutter.

File papers right away so when you need something, you can find an important paper right away. Have plenty of scrap paper and pens available. Have your laptop plugged in and ready to go. Many people find that their minds wonder and they worry about cleaning up their desks when it is really cluttered.

Time management is one of the hardest parts…

Of running your own business. No one is telling you to get to work. You have to have the motivation to put in the work. So, end each evening by making a list of things that need to be done the next day. You should also have a weekly (or biweekly) list and re-evaluate it to see if you are getting enough done. Also, keep your office space clean and organized. Nothing slows you down like searching for papers when you should be working.

The number one reason people leave their jobs is because they don’t feel appreciated, according to Gallup Research and the book “How Full is Your Bucket?” In addition, 65 percent of Americans didn’t receive workplace recognition in the last year. Here then, are serveral tips to help you reward and recognize employees.

How to Reward and Recognize Employees for Increased Productivity, Will Sherwood, The Sherwood Group, Graphic Design, Website Design, Santa Clarita, Los Angeles

Recognizing and rewarding praise-worthy employees can be as simple as a creative thank you and is important for keeping them productive and happy. Here are some ways to get started:

Pay for a Class

Show your employees you’re vested in their interests and support their ambitions. Pay for a fun class, such as skydiving or cooking, or let them pick out a business class to improve their skills. By doing this, you get a better idea of where they want to take their career while simultaneously supporting them. Take it a step further and ask them to write up a small proposal to show how they want to use their new knowledge in the workplace and assign them new responsibilities. The more you show value and trust your employees’ decisions, the more they’ll deliver on performance.

Hold an Appreciation Meeting

Surprise your best employees by holding a spontaneous one-on-one meeting. Instead of discussing their behavior or a project, let them know how much you appreciate their work and give them specific examples of where they thrive. Give them a small gift that could both benefit their personal and professional life, such as a new tablet or up-to-date smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy S 6. Pay for some fun and professional apps, such as Evernote or a scheduler, to help with their workflow. Let them know you hope they enjoy it at home as well as the workplace to give them the freedom to embrace their new gift.

Give Time off to Volunteer

Honor your employees’ good deeds and desire to give back to the community by allotting time off to volunteer. Ask the employees to take some photos with their smartphones during their day and post them on the workroom bulletin board or refrigerator so everyone else in the office can see. Or, provide the opportunity for your employees to band together and start a blood drive, book collection or work day in a community garden as a group project. The experience could turn into a team-building exercise and help boost coworker relationships and morale by supporting one another.

Recognize Them Publicly

It’s not always enough to just say thanks or to give a special perk. True recognition comes from publicly acknowledging an employee’s efforts. Include a photo, bio and accomplishment in a community newsletter. Once the newsletter runs, bring it up in a meeting and talk about what an asset the employee is to the company. Ask a senior manager to send a personal note to say thank you and include a small token like a coffee card, flowers or invitation to discuss new ideas.

Offer Flex Time

Make employee recognition and rewards an ongoing process. Instead of choosing a perk just for a day, set a milestone and long-term reward. Tell employees if they hit a specific benchmark, they can work from home one day a week, come into the office late or take a long lunch. Let them know the reward is for being an asset to the company and you trust their productivity and work ethic.

The more you appreciate your employees, the more they’ll appreciate the workplace and value their job. Contact us for more thoughts and ideas.
